About This Event
Tania Vergara Dance-Theater returns to Selby to present excerpts from Echoes of My Barrio in honor of Hispanic Heritage month. Echoes of My Barrio will vividly portray the sensory memories of Tania Vergara’s city alongside the complex reality of present-day Cuba. The distinctive calls of the pregoneros—humble voices born from necessity—reveal something deeper: the creativity and resilience of a people who endure. What may initially seem connected only to subsistence gradually transforms into a greater cry—a call for freedom, respect, and dignity. The work will feature moments of improvisation in which the dancers contribute elements of their own voices, emotions, and personal experiences, creating their own interpretations of the pregones. For the first time, the company will incorporate batá drums, powerful instruments deeply connected to Afro-Cuban Yoruba culture and religious traditions. The score will weave together the pregoneros’ calls, street ambience, batá rhythms, and fragments of Cuban music, creating a vibrant landscape where survival becomes rhythm and necessity becomes dance. To conclude the performance, and continuing the company’s beloved tradition at Selby Library, the dancers will invite the audience to join them for an energetic and interactive salsa class!!
